Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) released the intellectual property trends for the first quarter of the year 2023

In the first quarter of the year 2023, a total of 17,226 patent applications were filed in Taiwan, representing a 2% decrease compared to the same period last year. Among them, there were 12,486 invention applications, which remained relatively stable, while trademark applications decreased by 4% to reach 21,494.

Regarding inventions, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) topped the list with 752 applications, maintaining its position as the leading domestic applicant. Applied Materials, Inc. ranked first among foreign applicants with 182 applications. As for trademarks, Uni-President Enterprises Corporation filed the highest number of applications among domestic applicants with 102, while SAIC General Motors Wuling Automobile (SGMW) led among foreign applicants with 84 applications.

Foreign Design Patent Applications Grow by 6%

A total of 17,226 patent applications were filed in Taiwan, including 12,486 invention applications, a slight decrease of 0.4%. The number of applications by domestic applicants (4,637) and foreign applicants (7,849) remained relatively stable. Additionally, there were 1,654 design patent applications, showing a 1% increase, primarily driven by a 6% growth in applications by foreign applicants, while utility model applications decreased.

Top Domestic Applicants for Invention and Design Patents: TSMC and Acer

Among the top ten domestic applicants for inventions, TSMC filed 752 applications, maintaining its top position for the fourth consecutive year in the first quarter. MediaTek Inc. experienced the largest growth, with a 121% increase, reaching 146 applications (see Figure 1). Innolux Corporation, with 101 applications, surpassed the hundred-application mark for the first time and set a new quarterly record. As for design patents, Acer ranked first with 24 applications (see Figure 2).





 
► Both domestic enterprises and research institutions in Taiwan have shown positive growth in the number of invention applications.
 
For domestic enterprises, the number of invention applications increased by 2% compared to the same period last year, with a total of 3,817 applications. Similarly, research institutions experienced a growth of 9%, reaching 83 applications. On the other hand, universities and colleges saw a decrease, with 341 applications.
 
► Foreign individuals and organizations filing invention and design patents are led by Applied Materials, Inc. and Ford Global Technologies.
 
The number of invention applications filed by foreign individuals reached 7,849, remaining relatively stable compared to the same period last year. Among the countries and regions, Japan topped the list with 3,504 applications (see Figure 3), surpassing others.
